2024 Mosquito Surveillance Season Underway

The Ada County Mosquito Abatement District (ACMAD) surveillance operations are underway for the 2024 season. Throughout the mosquito season, the surveillance team will set mosquito traps targeting different species of mosquitoes throughout the county. The mosquitoes collected in these traps are then sorted by gender and species (as only female mosquitoes bite). The samples of the two species of mosquitoes that are known to carry West Nile virus in Ada County (Culex pipiens and Culex tarsalis) are then tested in the mosquito lab. If it is determined that a sample of mosquitoes is carrying West Nile virus, ACMAD notifies the public in real time via the Mosquito Tracker, Facebook and Nextdoor app notices, and press releases for dispersal from media outlets.
