Meridian Library District Decision

The Ada County Commissioners voted Wednesday March 29, 2023 to NOT place a measure to dissolve the Meridian Library District on the November ballot. The vote was unanimous.

The vote to NOT place the measure on the ballot comes following a petition submitted to the board by a group called Concerned Citizens of Meridian. The petition by the citizens group centered on books the group considered offensive that they say are available to children at the Meridian Library District. Pursuant to Title 33, Chapter 27, Idaho Code, the board held two public hearings to hear from the community on the issue.

While the board agreed there were valid concerns presented by the concerned citizens group, the measure to dissolve the district was overly broad, and the board has no authority to oversee the library’s functions.
Commissioner Ryan Davidson, Board Chair Rod Beck and Commissioner Tom Dayley each expressed their appreciation for the community involvement and encouraged both parties to cultivate a productive dialogue going forward.
