Ada County Updates Animal Control Ordinance

Following several months of public comment including in-person testimony, emails, and phone calls, Ada County Commissioners have approved an update to the Ada County Animal Control Ordinance. This ordinance applies to those living in Unincorporated Ada County.

The following list includes some of the major requirements and prohibitions outlined in the ordinance. The full ordinance can be viewed at: Animal Control Ordinance

• Criminalizes cruelty to animals which constitutes a misdemeanor
• Provides a list of animals county citizens are prohibited from owning
• Requires, regulates, and provides fees for dog licenses
• Limits the number of dogs and cats that can live in a home (4 total cats & dogs)
• Regulates and requires licenses for noncommercial and commercial kennels
• Prohibits dogs from running at large within the county
• Prohibits keeping stray animals without notifying animal control
• Requires, regulates, monitors, and provides for quarantine schedules for animals who contract rabies
• Provides for a quarantine schedule for animals that present an immediate danger
• Prohibits directing an animal to attack
• Provides a fee schedule for dog bites and attacks ($150 for the first offense)
• Prohibits habitual noisemaking and dog barking (misdemeanor)
• Authorizes animal control officers to designate an animal as dangerous or at risk
• Provides an appeal process for the owner of an animal that has been designated dangerous or at risk
