SURVEILLANCE FIELD TECHNICIAN GENERAL SUMMARY
Surveillance Field Technicians work to collect and identify mosquitoes, providing a critical role in keeping Ada County residents safe from mosquito-borne diseases, including West Nile virus. This entry-level position is a great opportunity for those seeking experience in the biological sciences or public health fields. Surveillance Field Technicians receive paid training in the identification, collection, and testing of mosquitoes for disease. In this role, Surveillance Field Technicians will learn mosquito biology, participate on research projects, and work with the latest technology in field biology. This is a part-time to full-time seasonal position (5-10 hours a day, 4 days a week), where a typical day involves using GPS to navigate to mosquito sample collection sites, retrieving samples for identification in the lab, and preparing mosquito samples for in-house disease testing. There is a possible potential for full-time hours in this role.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Performs varied moderately complex work under general supervision according to pre-defined guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Skill in the identification of mosquito species;
Operates application or surveillance equipment;
Reads and navigates by paper and digital maps;
Responsible for routine maintenance of equipment;
Ability to understand mosquito physical characteristics in all stages of development and breeding habitats.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
May assist in special projects as assigned;
May assist with training of other employees;
May assist in fabrication and rebuilding of equipment;
Assist in collection, monitoring and distribution of biological control agents;
May be required to drive in the evening;
May complete work orders by mixing, applying and recording pesticide applications in accordance with work orders and applicable laws;
May review chemical labels and material safety data sheet (MSDS) for each product in use before application;
May be responsible for the mixing and application of pesticides;
Properly disposes of empty chemical containers and reinstate materials;
Uses and maintains all personal protection equipment recommended by product label, MSDS and department policy.
Performs other related functions as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of business mathematics;
Skill in the safe operation of equipment;
Ability to work and communicate effectively with the general public and coworkers, in person and over the phone;
Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions and read and understand herbicide MSDS sheets and labels;
Ability to use a personal computer and mobile field;
Ability to understand Global Positioning System (GPS) technology for daily use of digital navigation equipment;
Ability to use GPS equipment for mapping, surveillance and/or pesticide applications;
Ability to maintain cooperative working relationship with other employees;
Ability to work in the field independently and with peers and public.
Must possess and maintain a valid Idaho driver’s license to operate County vehicles and equipment;
This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The nature of the work will require the employee to be in the field for long periods of time under various weather conditions;
The work may require moving, transporting, and using pesticides;
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.;
Must work with hazardous materials, heavy equipment and occasionally must negotiate fences, hazardous steep terrain with rough, rocky or wet surfaces;
Must maintain appearance and cleanliness of work area;
At times the employee may be exposed to dogs, farm animals, snakes and biting and stinging insects.

Schedule:

PM shift – Monday to Thursday, 7pm – 12:30am

AM shift – Tuesday through Friday, 5:30am to 10am

Wage structure:

$14.00/hr DOE +
