Mosquito Larvae Hunt with Ada County Commissioner Diana Lachiondo

Ada County Commissioner Diana Lachiondo joined the Ada County Mosquito Abatement District (ACMAD) on a larvae hunt last week. It was National Mosquito Control Awareness Week, and Desireé Keeney (Ada County Weed, Pest and Mosquito Abatement Deputy Director) and Robin Howard (ACMAD Larvicide Crew Lead) demonstrated how to find mosquito larva in stagnant water sources using “dippers.” Once any mosquito larva are found, ACMAD uses a naturally occurring bacterium found in soils (Bti), which targets mosquito larva. In 2019, ACMAD larvicide crews made nearly 65,000 treatments throughout Ada County. The larvicide team is in imperative component of protecting people from West Nile Virus during mosquito season.

The larvae hunt also offers an important reminder to empty water out of planters and other items in your yard that hold water.
