Deputies find 14 pounds of pot during I-84 traffic stop Wednesday

An Ada County Sheriff’s Office deputy found 14 heat-sealed bags of marijuana in the trunk of a car he pulled over for a traffic violation on Interstate 84 early Wednesday afternoon.

Carlos Rojas and Carlos Zavala are both being held in the Ada County Jail on felony marijuana trafficking charges.

The deputy pulled over a grey Nissan Sentra just before 1 p.m. on eastbound I-84, just east of Boise, when he noticed the car was following too close to a semitrailer.

It was during the traffic stop when the deputy smelled a strong marijuana odor coming from inside the car. Zavala, who was driving the car, did not have a valid driver’s license or a copy of the contact for the car, which is a rental from California.

The deputy then searched the car and found a black garbage bag in the trunk with 14 sealed packages of marijuana inside – with each weighing about a pound.

He also found a smaller amount of pot and some drug paraphernalia inside the car.

Deputies then arrested both men and booked them into the jail. They are set to make their initial court appearances Thursday afternoon.
