K9

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office K9 program has nine deputy and dog teams.

Five of the dogs, all Labrador retrievers, are strictly for drug-detection. The other four, all Belgian Malinois or German Shepherds, are apprehension dogs who aid deputies in locating and taking people into custody that flee from arrest. Three of the apprehension dogs can also smell for drugs, and the fourth can sniff for explosives.

Our K9 dogs and their handlers are certified for proficiency with the state of Idaho every year.

Seven of the nine K9 dogs are assigned to patrol teams across Ada County. One of our drug-sniffing dogs is assigned to our narcotics unit, and one of our apprehension dogs is assigned to our Court Services Bureau, which includes Misdemeanor Probation and Ada County Courthouse Security.

How We Help the Community

Drug Interdiction/Response to Other Agencies’ Calls for Assistance

Seven of our K9 dogs and their handlers are assigned to ACSO patrol teams and respond to calls for service across Ada County – including requests from other Treasure Valley law enforcement agencies in need of help if our teams are not actively involved in a call.

Our K9 dogs search homes, businesses and vehicles for federal, state, county, and city agencies – including the Ada Metro Narcotics Task Force.

Assisting School Administrators and Teachers

Our drug-sniffing K9 dogs are often called on to search lockers, bags and vehicles at public and private schools throughout Ada County.

A simple request is all it takes – the ACSO K9 Team will respond with multiple dogs to help keep Ada County’s schools a safe learning environment. The teams love going to schools just for fun, too. The dogs love to show off their skills during demonstrations.

Helping Parents and Families

Our dedication to the community includes a willingness to help concerned parents that would like their homes or vehicles “sniffed” for illegal drugs. The K9 teams can also help parents by educating them on current drug trends, drug identification and where to find effective drug counseling.

Partnering with Business Owners

The Sheriff’s K9 Unit assists business owners with narcotics detection in the common areas of their company. We support efforts to maintain drug free programs in the workplace. Our dogs are also called on to check rental homes and vehicles after tenants have moved out.
