Star Police

In 2003, the City of Star began contracting for law enforcement services with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.

There are eight sheriff’s deputies, two detectives and an administrative assistant assigned solely to patrolling and protecting Star. This means the deputies are familiar with the community’s people and unique issues. These Star officers can call on fellow deputies from the Sheriff’s Office for help when needed.

The partnership between Star and the Ada County Sheriff’s Office means Star has access to all of the county’s law enforcement resources without the administrative costs of running an independent police department.

Sergeant Zach Hessing was named Chief of Police in Star in October 2021, taking over for Lt. Jake Vogt, who is now in charge of a patrol team for the ACSO.

Hessing is a familiar face to the citizens of Star. He began his career at the Ada County Sheriff’s Office in 2016 after spending seven years with the Elko Police Department, where he was a patrol officer and a detective. After coming home to Idaho in 2016, Hessing worked as a patrol officer in Star for several years before being promoted to sergeant in 2020, where he took over a patrol team for the ACSO.

Hessing’s familiarity with the City of Star made him a logical choice to take over the chief role from Vogt when he was promoted to lieutenant earlier this year.

Chief Hessing is committed to continuing the successful partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and the City of Star.
