28-year-old Meridian man charged with vehicular manslaughter in connection with car vs. pedestrian crash from last fall

Cole L. Clucas is also charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of controlled substance and open container in connection with the death of 54-year-old Korena Baker in October.

Korena Baker walking next to Vallejo Road Sept. 29 when she was hit by a car driven by Clucas.

Baker was taken to the hospital after the crash to get treatment for critical injuries. She died Oct. 5.

Clucas registered a .178 blood alcohol content (BAC) level after the crash – which is over twice the legal BAC limit of .08 in Idaho. Deputies found an open bottle of vodka in his car, and vaping equipment.

Ada County Prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Clucas Thursday, and deputies from our ACTION team arrested him later in the day and booked him into the Ada County Jail.

Clucas left jail after posting a $150,000 bond. His initial court appearance is set for Monday.

Clucas was driving a Toyota Camry east on Vallejo Road, towards south Cole Road around 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 29 when he lost control of his car, crossed over the middle, went into the other lane, and hit Korena Baker, who was walking off the north side of the road.

The force of the impact was severe. Baker was thrown to the ground and into a nearby fence.

When deputies arrived, citizens who saw what happened had already begun first aid. Deputies helped with that until paramedics arrived moments later.

Clucas remained on scene. Deputies interviewed him and gathered evidence while other deputies worked on the crash reconstruction.

He was taken to the jail for a court-ordered blood draw and released.

The charge of vehicular manslaughter with a DUI is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
