28-year-old Boise man will spend at least two decades in prison for cutting another man’s throat last summer

An Ada County Judge sentenced Anthony Reed Schmidt to 35 years in prison on Wednesday for felony counts of aggravated battery, use of a weapon in the commission of felony, and being a persistent violator.

Earlier this year an Ada County jury determined Schmidt slashed another man across the throat at a home in the Locust Grove/Franklin roads neighborhood in September 2015.

At the time of the attack, the man told investigators he didn’t know who Schmidt was. It turns out the man knew one of Schmidt’s family members, and the attack appears to be connected to some kind of dispute between the man and the family member.

Schmidt can ask for parole after serving the 20 years in prison.

Additional prison time is possible for Schmidt, who was charged earlier this summer with a felony count of recruiting gang members while he was in the Ada County Jail.

The next court hearing for that case is set for Nov. 30.

Ada County Sheriff’s Office deputies began their investigation into the aggravated battery case on Aug. 27, 2015 when they were sent to a home in the Locust Grove/Franklin roads neighborhood for a report of a stabbing.

Deputies arrived to find that a man who lived at the home was holding a towel on his bleeding neck.

That man later told deputies he answered the front door at the home and was suddenly attacked by a man he did not know. He said the attacker pulled out a razor and cut him across the throat before running away and getting into a car.

Paramedics transported the man to a local hospital for treatment, where he was listed in critical condition for almost a week.
