Fatal car vs. bike crash on Meridian Road still under investigation

Deputies are still investigating what led to a fatal collision between a bicyclist and a Ford Taurus on Meridian Road Friday afternoon.

Ada County coroner’s officials pronounced 47-year-old cyclist Kurt Krieger dead at the scene of the crash.

The 42-year-old woman driving the Taurus was not injured.

The crash occurred around 4:48 p.m. Friday. The woman was driving the Taurus north on Meridian Road when the car collided with Kurt Krieger, who was trying to cross Meridian Road on a bike at the Lake Hazel Road intersection.

The force of the impact knocked the Krieger off his bike. He was not wearing a helmet.

Meridian Road does not have a stop sign or traffic light at that intersection. It appears as if Krieger tried to cross Meridian Road from the east side of the intersection going west and got into the second of the five lanes when he was hit.

When deputies and paramedics arrived moments later, two off-duty nurses were giving Krieger CPR at the scene. Paramedics continued treatment before the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner’s officials list the cause of death as blunt force trauma.

Deputies interviewed the 42-year-old female driver and her 2005 Taurus is being examined for evidence.

No charges have been filed as of Monday morning.
