Fatal rollover crash on Black Cat Road still under investigation

Investigators are still trying to figure out why the driver of a Ford Explorer lost control before it rolled over and crashed off the side of Black Cat Road Thursday morning.

A 14-year-old girl died when she was thrown from the back of the Explorer. Emergency crews had to cut the 24-year-old female driver out of the wreckage of the SUV.

Paramedics transported the driver and a 46-year-old male passenger to a local hospital for treatment of what appear to be non life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. Thursday. The woman was driving the car northbound on Black Cat Road, just south of the Amity Road intersection, when she lost control of the Explorer. Witnesses say the SUV rolled over after the driver tried to steer it back on the road.

Deputies and paramedics arrived moments later. The girl, 14-year-old Autumn Barnes, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. It appears she was not wearing her seatbelt.

The case is still under investigation. No citations or charges have been issued.
