Scam Alert: Computer Support Refund Scam

On July 19, 2024, a Kuna Police deputy responded to a fraud report involving an elderly adult in Kuna.

The victim received an email that appeared to be from the Geek Squad. The email indicated she had been charged for a Geek Squad account. When she contacted the number listed in the email, she spoke with a male who offered to assist with the refund process. During this “process”, the unknown suspect told the victim they had accidentally deposited $20,000 from Geek Squad to her account, and that she would need to return the money.

He told her to withdraw cash minus the alleged Geek Squad fee and shipping. He told her place the bills between the pages of a book, wrap the book in foil, wrap the book in duct tape, and finally add bubble wrap to the box. They advised her to ship the package overnight via FedEx to an address in California.
The scammer also told her to turn off her phone and not talk to anyone.

The deputy was able to track the package using the victim’s receipt. He contacted FedEx, who were able to stop the delivery of the package. Apart from shipping fees, the victim will be able to recover their lost funds.
