Located in Southeast Boise, the Barber Pool Conservation Area is a wildlife refuge teeming with over 300 native species of plants and wildlife. Spanning over 700 acres between the Highway 21 bridge and the Harris Ranch subdivision, this area is painted with rich riparian habitat that fosters a huge amount of life. The Idaho Foundation for Parks & Lands, together with community partners and local residents are creating a plan to manage and improve the Barber Pool Conservation Area so that it may thrive for generations to come.

There are several different entities that own parcels of land within the Barber Pool Conservation Area. Ada County is one of them, which is managed by Parks & Waterways. The Intermountain Bird Observatory by Boise State University owns a parcel, where the Diane Moore Nature Center is located. The City of Boise owns a parcel where the future Sue Howell Park will exist. Other entities owning parcels are the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Bureau of Land Management, Micron, Veolia Water, and Idaho Department of Parks & Recreation.

Ada County manages a 35 acre parcel just off the Warm Springs entrance to the Greenbelt behind where the Ben’s Crow Inn used to reside, which is now part of The Rim at East Valley subdivision. Dedicated as a conservation area by the Ada County Commissioners on December 1, 2020, the goal of this parcel is to create a progressive management plan for riparian land use. Working with the other entities mentioned above, the plan is to enhance the habitat to support native wildlife populations, increase diversity of plants and pollinators, protest and restore healthy cottonwood stands, foster non-destructive human use opportunities, and reverse the decline of riparian vegetation.

In high desert climates, riparian habitat is quickly shrinking. This rare habitat has been on a long-term downward trend, with this coalition committed to maintain and enhance this entire corridor.
