RE: State v. Timmy Kinner Jr. – Sentencing

BOISE – Timmy Kinner Jr. was sentenced today, June 10, to more than two consecutive life sentences for murdering a three-year-old girl and injuring eight others in a mass stabbing at a Boise apartment complex in June 2018.

Honorable Ada County District Judge Nancy Baskin sentenced Mr. Kinner, 33, to two consecutive fixed life sentences for first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a persistent violator enhancement.  In addition, she imposed 120 consecutive years in prison for his remaining charges. This sentence ensures the defendant will not be eligible for parole, and will never step foot outside of prison.

Mr. Kinner was arrested three years ago on June 30, 2018 after stabbing nine people – six children and three adults – killing 3-year-old Ruya Kadir, who had celebrated her birthday earlier that day.

On June 30, 2018, Mr. Kinner was outside the victims’ apartment complex when he attacked residents who were walking back to their apartment. The defendant then chased another victim into an apartment and forced his way into a room where he continued to stab more victims who were seeking safety.

For his crimes, Mr. Kinner was charged with 13 felonies, including first-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, Burglary and use of a deadly weapon. He pleaded guilty in March of this year to all charges except the Burglary charge.  He also pled guilty to a persistent violator enhancement, which allowed the agreed upon fixed consecutive life sentences. The plea gives finality to these sentences as Mr. Kinner waived his right to appeal as part of the agreement. The state agreed not to continue to seek the death penalty as a condition of the agreement.

The following is a statement from Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts:

“Nearly three years ago, our community was shaken by the events of June 30, 2018. I know no sentence can ever replace the loss of Ruya or erase the amount of trauma and physical harm so many victims experienced that day. I want to recognize the heroic efforts of several of the victims. Their actions undoubtedly saved other lives.

These families have been nothing short of courageous and brave during the immediate aftermath of the crimes and as this case moved throughout the court process over the last three years. On behalf of my entire office, I extend my deepest condolences to Ruya’s family for their unimaginable loss, and to all the victims who were impacted by these egregious crimes.

Lastly, I want to thank the Boise Police Department, along with my prosecution team, for the countless hours they have spent on this case.”
