RE: State v. Dakota Honeycutt- Sentencing

BOISE – On Monday, 20-year-old Dakota Honeycutt was sentenced to prison for killing 48-year-old Kevin Hunt.

The Honorable Ada County District Judge Nancy Baskin sentenced Mr. Honeycutt to serve up to 35 years in prison, with 15 years fixed before being eligible for parole. The state recommended a sentence of 45 years with 18 years fixed.

On the morning of Dec. 26, 2021, the victim was found dead by a gunshot wound at a park in Star. Ada County Sheriff’s detectives located Mr. Honeycutt driving the victim’s vehicle that night, and interviewed him. The defendant initially told detectives he saw the victim complete suicide. The investigation determined that was not true, and that Mr. Honeycutt pulled the trigger of the firearm
that killed Mr. Hunt. The defendant then attempted to conceal the firearm, which was later located by law enforcement, nearby in the Boise River.

Mr. Honeycutt was originally charged with first-degree murder. In February 2023, Mr. Honeycutt pled guilty to second-degree murder as part of a settlement agreement.

“I extend my condolences to Mr. Hunt’s family and friends,” said Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts. “Thank you to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office for their thorough work on this investigation, which allowed my team to ensure justice was served in this case.”
