RE: State v. Nicholas J. Campbell – Sentencing

BOISE – Nicholas J. Campbell was sentenced Wednesday to serve up to 45 years in prison.

On the morning of Nov. 30, 2018, Mr. Campbell attacked a woman who was jogging her regular route in a neighborhood in southern Ada County. Mr. Campbell pinned the victim to the ground,
strangled her until she was unconscious, and attempted to sexually assault her. The defendant fled the scene after the attack.

Honorable Ada County District Judge James Cawthon sentenced Mr. Campbell to a 45-year prison sentence, with 40 years to be served before being eligible for parole.

The investigation in this case took several years. Because of the tireless work of Ada County Sheriff’s detectives, coupled with DNA evidence, Mr. Campbell was identified as the suspect, and
charged for the attack in April 2021. The investigation also found the defendant followed the victim on several occasions prior to attacking her.

In October 2022, Mr. Campbell pled guilty to battery with intent to commit a serious felony – rape with an enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury, and destruction of evidence.

“Thank you to the victim for her strength, courage and patience as this case moved through the criminal justice system,” said Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts. “I commend the Ada County
Sheriff’s Detectives who put countless hours into this investigation. I’m grateful to the Sheriff’s Office and to my prosecution team for the hard work which ensured justice was served.”
