RE: State v. Colton Reagan – Sentencing

BOISE – Colton Reagan, 26, was sentenced Friday to prison for the murder of his cellmate 57-year-old Gerald B. Cummings Jr.

The Honorable Ada County District Judge Samuel Hoagland sentenced Mr. Reagan to life imprisonment, with 30 years fixed. Mr. Reagan waived his right to appeal the sentence as part of the negotiated resolution when he pled guilty to first-degree murder in December 2022.

Mr. Reagan was convicted of possession of controlled substance in Canyon County in 2019. Mr. Reagan was on probation for the possession of controlled substance case when he committed a grand theft in 2021 in Ada County. The judge sentenced Mr. Reagan to a retained jurisdiction at the Idaho State Correctional Institute for the grand theft. He refused to participate in the rehabilitative programming offered during the period retained jurisdiction and was thereafter sentenced to prison. While he was serving that prison sentence, he brutally beat his cellmate, Mr. Cummings, to death in December 2021. Mr. Reagan had a documented violent conduct while in custody.

“I extend my sincere condolences to Mr. Cummings’ family. Thank you for the hard work done on this case by my trial team and the Ada County Sheriff’s Office,” said Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts.
