RE: | State v. Gary Hawkins – Sentencing |
BOISE – Gary Hawkins, 52, was sentenced Wednesday to the maximum punishment for attempted
strangulation.
Mr. Hawkins was on parole for first-degree murder when he was arrested in September 2019 on this
felony charge for strangling a victim several times inside a vehicle. A jury found Mr. Hawkins guilty
of attempted strangulation in March 2021.
Ada County District Judge Peter Barton handed down the sentence prosecutor’s requested – 15 years
fixed in prison, which is the maximum prison sentence for attempted strangulation. In addition to the
sentence, Mr. Hawkins will also have a no contact order with the victim for the next 30 years, and pay
a $50,000 fine.
“I want to thank the victim for her courage in coming forward to report this serious crime,” said Jan
Bennetts, Ada County Prosecutor. “Thank you also to the Boise Police Department for their thorough
investigation.”
