RE: State v. Matthew Crawford – Sentencing

BOISE – On Monday, 23-year-old Matthew Crawford was sentenced to serve up to 40 years in prison
for killing 24-year-old Guy Lopez II.

On March 15, 2021, Mr. Crawford planned to rob Mr. Lopez. The defendant asked for help from his
friends and then met up with the victim and tried to rob him. After being physically beaten, the victim
shot a pistol once in self-defense. Mr. Crawford then shot six times at the victim, hitting him twice
and killing Mr. Lopez. The defendant fled the scene of the shooting in a vehicle, and then ran on foot
to avoid being arrested when he was spotted by a Boise Police Officer.

Mr. Crawford pled guilty to second-degree murder in February 2022 as part of a Rule 11 Plea
Agreement. As part of the plea agreement, the remaining charges of robbery and destruction of
evidence were dismissed.

The defendant must serve 15 years imprisonment before being eligible for parole. Honorable Ada
County District Judge Nancy Baskin also ordered the defendant to pay $16,838 in restitution and a
$5,000 civil fine.

“I extend my deepest condolences to Mr. Lopez’s family and friends,” said Ada County Prosecutor Jan
Bennetts. “Thank you for the quick and impressive response from Boise Police Patrol Officers at the
scene that day, and the Boise Police Detectives for their thorough investigation, which allowed my
office to ensure justice was served.”
