RE: State v. Carlos Sandoval sentencing

BOISE – A Boise man was sentenced Thursday to serve 35 years and up to life in prison for the murder of a 45-year-old man.

Carlos Sandoval, 25, was arrested and charged on Aug. 2, 2019 with first-degree murder, aggravated battery and an enhancement of using a deadly weapon in commission of a felony. Mr. Sandoval shot and killed the victim in a Boise residence the two were living in. Mr. Sandoval also struck another person with a bullet.

In November 2019, Mr. Sandoval pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and his remaining charges were dismissed.

The Ada County Prosecutor’s Office asked for a fixed life sentence in the case. The office considered Mr. Sandoval’s criminal history and cited a lack of remorse and desire to commit violent crimes in the future.

Honorable District Court Judge Steven Hippler sentenced Mr. Sandoval to life in prison, with 35 years of those to be served before being eligible for parole.

“It appears to me that since a young age (Mr. Sandoval) has reacted in a way that has left victims in his wake, and often times, victims that should be closest to him,” Hippler said. “It is clear the defendant has an outlook on life and use of violence that is disturbing and dangerous.”
