RE: State v. Cory Campbell sentencing

BOISE – Cory Campbell, of Eagle, was sentenced Friday to up to 40 years in prison for battery with the intent to commit rape.

In March 2019, Mr. Campbell, who was 17 at the time of his arrest, was charged with felony sex crimes including rape and forcible sexual penetration by use of a foreign object. While the defendant was under the age of adulthood at the time he committed the offenses, Idaho law provides for the treatment as an adult for certain serious felony crimes.

On Friday, Ada County District Judge Michael J. Reardon sentenced Mr. Campbell to serve up to 40 years in prison, with 20 years fixed.

Mr. Campbell, now 18, pleaded guilty in November 2019 to battery with the intent to commit rape. Though other charges were dismissed, by the terms of the plea agreement, each of Mr. Campbell’s 10 victims were entitled to speak at the sentencing. Some of the victims had family speak on their behalf. In all, 12 victim impact statements were read Friday.

During sentencing, Judge Reardon described the defendant’s actions as “predatory and serial” and those actions caused a “great deal of societal harm.”

Judge Reardon said Mr. Campball should now be able to see the harm his actions caused, after listening to the victim statements.

“Thank you to the brave victims for coming forward to report these crimes and for speaking before the court today,” said Ada County Prosecutor Jan M. Bennetts. “I would like to thank the Ada County Sheriff’s Office for their thorough investigation.”
