RE: State v. Hyoungsuk Kim sentencing

BOISE – A 52-year-old man was given a 20-year prison sentence, with five years fixed, for battery with the intent to commit rape.

Hyoungsuk Kim was arrested in October 2018 for attempted rape of a woman while at a Meridian church. In July 2019, a jury found Mr. Kim guilty of battery with the intent to commit rape.

Evidence presented at Mr. Kim’s sentencing Friday indicated he also gathered people in the community after the jury trial to turn against the victim and further victimize her.

“The fact that he was trying to get the Korean community to victimize the victim, demonstrates a lack of remorse,” said Honorable District Judge Cheri Copsey. “In listening and reading his letter, he clearly has remorse that he is in trouble … but there is no remorse for what he did. Until that happens, there is no indication that he will change his behavior.”

Judge Copsey also issued a $5,000 civil penalty and a 20-year no contact order.
