RE: State v. Reginald Burley jury trial conviction

BOISE – A jury convicted a 58-year-old man Thursday of a rape that occurred nearly six years ago in Boise.

Reginald Burley, who was 53 at the time of the crime, was indicted by a grand jury for rape and first-degree kidnapping shortly after the crimes were reported.

Following the investigation, a warrant was issued for Mr. Burley’s arrest in December of 2014. Ada County Prosecutors learned that Mr. Burley had been arrested in January 2015 in his home state of California for a parole violation. He was again arrested for attempted kidnapping of a victim under the age of 14 in California in December 2015 and pleaded guilty to that charge, according to court documents. He was eventually extradited back to Ada County to face these local charges.

Following the jury trial, Mr. Burley was found guilty of raping the adult victim in her own residence in Boise. The victim was eventually able to escape her residence and immediately sought help and law enforcement assistance. The jury found Mr. Burley not guilty of committing first-degree kidnapping.

His sentencing is set for 4 p.m. March 17, 2020 before the Honorable District Judge Patrick J. Miller.

“I appreciate the victim having the courage to come forward,” said Ada County Prosecutor Jan M. Bennetts. “I also want to thank the jury for their time and attention in this case and the Boise Police Department for their hard work on a case that took several years to bring to trial.”

Idaho law provides that the punishment for a conviction of rape is up to life in prison.
