RV/Off-Highway Vehicle Licensing & Registration

RV REGISTRATION IN IDAHO

  • The vehicle must belong to an Idaho resident or business.
  • The vehicle must be titled in Idaho before it can be registered. (You can apply for vehicle registration immediately after submitting the required documents to a county assessor’s motor vehicle office.)
  • If you are a new resident, you must register and title your vehicle(s) within 90 days.

An Idaho resident is anyone whose principal home has been in Idaho for 90 continuous days, although residency may be declared at any time earlier, and vehicles may be titled and registered at that time. Idaho residents who are temporarily in another state (i.e., students or military personnel) may request titles and registrations for their vehicle(s) through the mail. What should I bring when applying for my vehicle registration and title? You should bring the following:

  • The vehicle being titled and registered. You will need to have the vehicle identification number (VIN) inspected. This inspection can generally be performed by a deputy of either the county assessor motor vehicle office or the county sheriff’s office.
  • Current title and registration. If the vehicle has not been titled in your name, be sure the title has been signed over to you by the seller, and that you have a bill of sale from the seller. If the title is being held by a lienholder, bring the lienholder’s name and address. If your title has been lost, you will need to apply for a duplicate title from the state of issuance.
  • Your personal identification.
  • Cash or a check for payment of any applicable taxes and fees

MOTOR HOMES

Motor home “registration fees” are based on vehicle age as listed above. Motor homes are also required to register as a recreational vehicle (RV). RV fees start at $8.50 for the first $1,000 of market value, plus $5.00 for each additional $1,000 of market value. The market value used to calculate RV fees for motorhomes is unique and uses a valuation factor based on the type of motorhome chassis. This approach excludes the value of the motor home chassis from the recreational portion of the vehicle. Subsequent renewal fees are determined using a depreciation scale. NOTE: Motor home RV valuation factors are established by the Idaho State Tax Commission.  To determine the recreational value of a motorhome coach, multiply the overall value of the motorhome, including all optional equipment, by the following pre-determined chassis valuation factors. The product of the multiplication is the RV value used to determine RV fees.

Motor Home/Van Type Class RV Valuation Factor
Mini Motor Home (MMH) C 50%
Motor Home (MH) A 60%
(MH) Front Engine Diesel A 45%
(MH) Rear Engine Diesel A 58%
Van Conversions B 25%
EXAMPLE
The basic registration fees for a five-year-old Class C Motor Home with a market value of $30,000 would be:
VEHICLE REGISTRATION FEE – $57.00 Basic registration fee (for a vehicle three to six years old)
RV FEE – (RV Fee is based on RV Valuation using RV Valuation Factor above) RV Valuation Factor x Market Value = RV Valuation
.50 (50%) x $30,000 = $15,000
+ $8.50 For the first $1,000 of RV Valuation
+ $70.00 ($5.00 x 14) – for each remaining $1,000 in RV Valuation over $1,000
= $135.50 Total basic registration fee for the above motorhome. ($57.00 Registration Fee + $78.50 RV Fee)
EMS, County HDR, Mail, Plate, and any county administrative fees are additional.

OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE REGISTRATION & VEHICLE LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

Recreational Vehicles Near a River In the Mountains.

Off Highway Registration Types
There are two types of off-highway registration. Each registration type has specific limitations on where the vehicle registered can operate.

  • Idaho Parks and Recreation (IDPR) OHV Registration. Idaho Department of Park and Recreation off highway registration. This registration stays with the vehicle when ownership transfers.
  • Restricted Use Plate. This unique plate, by itself, is not registration and requires a current IDPR OHV registration sticker to be displayed on the plate to be valid. These plates, along with their associated OHV registration, stay with the vehicle when ownership transfers.
    • RU plates are issued through the ITD registration system and subject to the ten year plate life. Off highway vehicles displaying a validated RU plate have a larger operational area than those with only the OHV registration.
    • RU Plate Fee: $8.80

Motorcycles wishing to ride on trails will have to purchase the OHV sticker and affix it to their current motorcycle license plate. Registered motorcycles do not need to purchase the ‘restricted’ plate.

As of January 1, 2020, owners of off highway vehicles who are not Idaho residents are required to obtain an Idaho Parks and Recreation non-resident off highway vehicle user certificate before using their off highway vehicle in Idaho. Non-residents may also purchase a restricted use late. Use privileges are restricted to the specific type of registration issued.  Bona fide non-residents who register in Idaho are not required to title their off-highway vehicles in Idaho to register but are required to provide proof the vehicle being registered in Idaho belongs to them. A title or registration document from their state of residence or purchase paperwork from a dealer showing the sale of the vehicle to the registrant in question, would generally be the primary documentation the registrant should provide. In addition the registrant should show a driver license or other identification, to demonstrate they are a resident of another state. Non-resident registration stickers will be available for purchase at all Idaho recreation registration vendors, County Assessor’s offices/DMVs and IDPR Service Centers.

The annual registration period is January 1 to December 31.

  • Resident Registration Fee: $12.00 (includes a $1.50 vendor fee for Idaho Parks and Recreation)
  • Restricted Use Plate
  • RU plates are issued through the ITD registration system and subject to the ten year plate life. Off highway vehicles displaying a validated RU plate have a larger operational area than those with only the OHV registration.
  • RU Plate Fee: $8.80

Restricted vehicles cannot operate on any state or controlled access roadway. They can cross state roadways at specified crossing points approved by the Idaho Transportation Department Board. Restricted vehicles are allowed to operate on any county roadway unless a political subdivision prohibits such operation on a specific roadway. A valid driver’s license and proof of liability insurance is still required when operating an ATV, UTV, or motorbike on any county roads unless otherwise closed by the authorized jurisdiction that manages that road.
