2020 Tax Bill Reduction

Idaho created the Public Safety Grant Initiative to leverage CARES Act funds to cover local public safety personnel expenses associated with the coronavirus. To participate in this initiative, local elected officials agreed not to increase the base property tax budgets and not to take the allowable 3% increase.  As a result, property taxpayers are receiving a one time property tax reduction for 2020.

All property taxpayers in Ada County are receiving property tax relief for 2020.  This includes taxpayers with properties in: Ada County, Boise, Meridian, Garden City, Star, Eagle and Kuna.

The amount of savings is listed on the front of the 2020 Ada County Consolidated Property Tax Bill.  Under COMMON QUESTIONS, refer to “Your bill includes Gov Little’s one time tax reduction of” to see your savings.

The savings amount varies by parcel.  It depends on your property’s taxable value (assessed value less exemptions) and the public safety personnel expenses of the taxing districts where the property is located.

Yes, your 2020 property tax bill already includes the one time reduction.  On your tax bill, the “TOTAL DUE” is the amount you owe.

These cities contract with Ada County for public safety services.  Therefore, the one time reduction for Eagle, Star and Kuna is already included in the reduction amount listed for Ada County on your bill.

If a mortgage company pays your property taxes through an escrow account, it will receive a 2020 property tax bill listing the one time reduction and the total amount due.  Your monthly mortgage payment could go up or down due to changes in taxes, insurance premiums, or other reasons.  Check your mortgage statement or contact your servicer regarding changes to your escrow account.

Property taxes are calculated each year.  The 2021 property tax bills will be based on property values as of January 1, 2021; any new relevant legislation; annual budgets of the taxing districts; and annual levy rates.

Yes, the 2020 reduction under the Governor’s Public Safety Grant Initiative is in addition to the approved benefit for the Property Tax Reduction (Circuit Breaker) and the Veterans Property Tax Reduction (listed on your tax bill under “STATE PROPERTY TAX REDUCTION” to reduce your property taxes.)  The “TOTAL DUE” is the amount you owe.

The full amount or the first half installment is due by December 21, 2020.  Under Idaho law, if a property tax becomes delinquent, a 2% late charge shall be added, and interest will accrue at 1% per month.  Mailed payments must have a USPS cancellation stamp of December 21, 2020 or earlier.  Payments are also accepted at our dropbox at the Ada County Courthouse and the Ada County Public Administration building.  For a full list of payment options, please visit our payment options page.
