Probation Services

When a youth is sentenced by the court, a juvenile probation officer is assigned to monitor and help the youth comply with their court-ordered terms. These may include detention or detention alternatives, community service, substance abuse testing, participation in programs, restitution, letter of apology to the victim, mediation, and payment of fees. How often a youth meets with their probation officer depends on their risk to the community and compliance with probation terms. It can range anywhere from daily to monthly contact.

As a parent, guardian or custodian of a child whose case is in the Idaho juvenile justice system, you have certain responsibilities.

  • You have the responsibility to attend all court hearings.
  • You have the responsibility – to the best of your ability – to help your child comply with any court-ordered conditions.
  • You have the responsibility to abide by any court orders directed at you, including bringing your child to court as directed.

If your child is placed on probation, the court may require that you, their parent or guardian, comply with specific conditions. This may include payment for services such as:

  • support for your child if placed out of your home;
  • the cost of treatment programs;
  • restitution to victims of your child’s conduct; and/or
  • attorney fees if the Court appointed one for your child.

The Court may also order you to refrain from certain actions or participate in counseling and parenting programs if they feel it would be beneficial.

Your child’s probation officer is required to monitor parental compliance. Failure to comply with the Court’s conditions may result in an Order to Show Cause (OSC) hearing. If you admit to the OSC petition or are found guilty, you may be sentenced to serve up to 5 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
