Penitentiary Canal Greenbelt Section Re-opening Delayed

(Boise, ID) – Ada County has been forced to delay the re-opening of the Penitentiary Canal Greenbelt section in east Boise until further notice.

The county discovered the asphalt pathway was damaged during construction. Opening this section without repairs would compromise public safety. Repairs will be made as quickly as possible and the county will continue to share updates as progress continues. During this time, users are asked to respect all closures and turn around at any and all barricades.

This section between Shakespeare Way and Diversion Dam has been closed since October in order to install irrigation pipe for the Penitentiary Canal and build a wider, safer, smoother asphalt pathway for Greenbelt users. The project will ultimately create 1.65 miles of 11’ wide, centerline striped asphalt pathway with 2’ wide recovery shoulders.  The old narrow pathway had steep and hazardous shoulders with a cracking, potholed surface that had failed extensively due to age and erosion.
